Funding Sought for Ethanol-to-Hydrogen Fueling Station for Chicago City Fleet

April 25, 2005

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Barack Obama and Rep. Rahm Emanuel said they are seeking federal funding for an ethanol-to-hydrogen fueling station for Chicago, according to the Associated Press. The plan aims to provide energy for emission-free vehicles that will be operated by the city. For Earth Day, the two Illinois Democrats held an event at an existing fuel station. Emanuel said about $3 million will be sought for the ethanol-to-hydrogen fueling stop in the next year's budget. The city of Chicago, along with the Gas Technology Institute, would install the fueling station. Water mixed with liquid ethanol would break down the fuel to produce hydrogen. The city operates some vehicles powered by the ethanol fuel, E-85, and compressed natural gas.
