Wisconsin Administrators Managing State Vehicles Moved to New Positions

September 20, 2004

MADISON, WI – Four administrators who oversaw state vehicles have been removed from their jobs and assigned different positions, reported the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel newspaper.Three of the four administrators were transferred out of the Department of Administration division that manages the state’s fleet, while one was demoted to section chief within the division.Sean Dilweg, the executive assistant to Administration Secretary Marc Marotta, told the Journal-Sentinel that the changes are lateral moves made in anticipation of Gov. Jim Doyle's upcoming two-year budget. These four fleet administrators conducted an investigation of the fleet this summer and found that more than 500 vehicles were underutilized. They recommended that the state sell more than 1,000 of its approximate 7,200 cars and trucks, according to the Journal-Sentinel. Doyle has placed a freeze on vehicle purchases for the remainder of 2004.The administrators’ review also found record-keeping problems and instances of improperly reported wages to the Internal Revenue Service, according to the Journal-Sentinel.Administration officials have described any tax liability as slight. They will meet with IRS officials later this month to try to reach an agreement on the matter.
