Los Angeles Mayor Reminds City Workers About Vehicle Responsibility

September 20, 2004

LOS ANGELES — City employees were reminded in a Sept. 10 memo from Mayor James Hahn that they must pay the parking fines incurred when they illegally park municipal vehicles, reported the Los Angeles Daily News. The mayor reinforced the importance of only using city pool cars for city-related business and stressed that employees are responsible for the vehicles while they are in their care.Deputy Mayor Brian K. Williams told the Daily News that Hahn’s letter was a simple reminder and was not prompted by abuses of city vehicle privileges.Although the Department of Transportation did not know how many city vehicles have been ticketed for parking violations, there are currently 36 outstanding tickets against city vehicles, Robert Andalon, management analyst for the DOT, told the paper.Of the city’s 9,000 vehicles, excluding police and fire vehicles, approximately 250 are part of the city pool available to employees for business.According to the Daily News, city employees in government vehicles are allowed to overstay time limits for parking, park up to 30 minutes in no-parking zones, loading zones, and alleys; park in preferential parking districts, and park at meters without inserting coins.City cars can be ticketed for parking in no-stopping and tow-away zones, in areas designated for street sweeping, in passenger loading zones, and in handicapped spaces.
