Officials in Westfield, Mass., are considering privatizing waste services for the city. If the plan goes through, the city anticipates about $1 million in savings.

A committee of city officials met in 2010 to look at trash collection services and decided to keep the service, through current Mayor Brian Sullivan told MassLive that the decision did not account for the profit associated with privatization, such as the sale of its refuse trucks.

Sullivan also told MassLive that the city will ask that private firms offer employment to the current employees of the city trash service. If necessary, the Department of Public Works will absorb nine employees as well. The city is still accepting proposals from private companies.
