Suffolk County, N.Y., elected leaders have agreed to rehire three auto mechanics lost to recent layoffs to help reduce the backlog of aging vehicles needing repairs.

The County Legislature added $135,638 in salaries and benefits to its 2014 budget, allowing the Public Works Department to hire the mechanics, reports Newsday.

The jobs were among nearly 300 cut in the middle of 2012 when officials projected a $500 million shortfall over three years. Many of the county's fleet vehicles, especially its police vehicles, have high odometer readings such as 200,000 miles.
