General Motors is reducing the weight of its 2016 Chevrolet Malibu as it enters a new generation with a significant redesign, the automaker has announced.

The next-gen Malibu mid-size sedan will be 300 pounds lighter than the current model, which will improve fuel economy as well as handling. GM will unveil the vehicle at the New York International Auto Show in April.

The Malibu will be redesigned with a "blank slate approach" with entirely new architecture and a wheelbase that's nearly four inches longer than the outgoing model, according to GM. It will have increased leg room and interior space.

GM hasn't said how it will achieve the lighter weight other than announcing it will use "higher-strength steel." The vehicle is expected to go on sale at the end of 2015.
