Ford and Azure Dynamics Introduce the Transit Connect Electric Wagon

November 17, 2011

DEARBORN, MI – Ford and Azure Dynamics introduce the Ford Transit Connect Electric Wagon for the commercial vehicle marketplace. Ford said it derived the Wagon from the Transit Connect Electric and that the vehicle is designed to transport cargo or passengers. The automaker said the Wagon is suited to campus settings, such as universities, military bases, health care facilities, airports and private businesses where frequent, short-range travel is common.

The Transit Connect Electric Wagon will qualify for the $7,500 federal incentive in the U.S. California is also offering an additional $15,000 incentive from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for the first Transit Connect Electric van or wagon purchased for deployment in that state.

The Wagon uses a liquid-cooled 28-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery (from Johnson Controls). The Wagon can achieve a range of 55 to 80 miles on a single charge, depending on driving conditions and ancillary power usage. The Wagon’s top speed is 75 mph.

According to Ford, since it introduced the Transit Connect Electric in December 2010, commercial fleets have purchased more than 450 of the vans. Fleets that have bought the vehicle include AT&T, Canada Post, DHL, FedEx Express, and Post Norway.

The Transit Connect Electric can recharge via either a standard 120-volt outlet or a 240-volt charging station. The vehicle’s charge port is located above the passenger-side rear wheel well.
