Seattle Department of Transportation announced that it will retrofit all trucks with sideguards to increase safety. The new sideguards will prevent pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcycles from getting caught under the vehicle in the event of a side-impact collision.

According to a blog post, the sideguards will also reduce air drag, increasing fuel efficiency. All new large trucks for the department will be fitted with sideguards.
