Harrison County to Downsize Sheriff’s Fleet

CORYDON, IN - The Harrison County Sheriff's department has been ordered by commissioners to cut down on its vehicle fleet, according to the Courier-Journal.

At their Jan. 4 meeting, county commissioners questioned how many vehicles the department needs and questioned several expenses resulting from accident repairs, the Journal reported.

Forty-one vehicles are currently assigned to the sheriff's department, reported the Journal. Commissioners requested in December that 13 vehicles be "turned over to the county" to save money.

The Journal  said one county commissioner calculated that the department only needs 28 vehicles - which would allow for one for each of the department's 22 officers - including the sheriff and chief - and the chaplain. It also would allow for five additional pool cars for use by reserve police officers and for backup when officers' cruisers are in the shop.
