Thomas County (Ga.) commissioners approved the purchase of 11 new vehicles and 42 laptops for the county’s sheriff’s office, the Union Record reported

The closure of a nearby state hospital has officers driving longer distances to drop off individuals requiring mental health services, resulting in higher mileage and increased maintenance costs. The jail administrator said that despite this, it is still cheaper to have deputies pick up inmates rather than use a transport service.

Adding new vehicles to the department will decrease maintenance costs.
