The City of Naperville, Ill., is planning a long-term test of fire engines and maintenance providers. Naperville City Council approved $1.4 million to pilot two fire engine models and two maintenance service plans over the next 10 years to determine which better withstands the test of time, reports the Daily Herald.

According to city documents, the city plans to purchase one fire engine from E-One and another from Pierce Manufacturing, along with the estimated maintenance costs provided by each vendor. The proposal also budgets for $100,000 in unplanned maintenance. The E-One fire engine is estimated to cost $693,308 and the Pierce fire engine is estimated to cost $737,300.

The city hopes to decrease downtime for the fire department with outsourced maintenance. Currently, city mechanics service all fire engines, but the number of mechanics certified to work on fire engines has fallen from six to three since 2014, according to the Daily Herald.
