Smith County, Texas, has hired its first ever fleet administrator to oversee the newly formed Vehicle Equipment Services Department. Brian Reynolds, previously director of fleet operations with the Texas Department of Public Safety, will plan, organize, and direct the activities of the new department. The Smith County Commissioners Court approved the new position in the county’s FY-2018 budget and approved hiring Reynolds on Jan. 30.

Reynolds will be responsible for consolidating approximately 350 vehicles used in various departments, standardizing practices and policies concerning vehicle use, maintenance and repair, and life cycle management. The county is seeking to reduce costs and improve an aging fleet with the new position.

“I see this as a great opportunity, to be the first fleet administrator here, to build value for the county,” Reynolds said. “Working with dedicated people who are looking to improve on what they have and to show the public that their government is being a good steward is what public service is really all about. I can’t wait to get started.”

Reynolds starts later this month.
