W.Va. County May Establish Fleet Management Department

In an effort to reduce operating costs, Berkeley County, W.Va., is may establish a vehicle management department to oversee the county’s 200 vehicles, The Journal reported.

Currently, each county department manages its own fleet, and the county spends an estimated $20,000 to $25,000 a year on vehicle maintenance.

The proposed department would oversee all purchasing, maintenance, and disposal of county vehicles. It would lower the average age of the county’s vehicle fleet and increase fleet resale value.

Funding the proposed department could be allocated from the county’s unencumbered fund balance, which currently sits around $600,000. If approved by the county council, the department would not likely be added until FY-19.
