Neb. Fleet Superintendent Retires After 44 Years of Service

August 15, 2017

Jim Chiles, superintendent of fleet service for the City of Lincoln, Neb., will retire on August 31. He began his career with the city 44 years ago as a fleet technician.

During his tenure, he has held the positions of technician, garage supervisor, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. He was present during three major consolidations, fleet growth from 314 units in 1973 to a very diversified fleet of 985 presently, the switch to an internal service fund, implementation of a rental rate system, development of a replacement fund, and full automation and integration of seven remote fuel facilities.

Chiles said he was fortunate to work with Fleet Manager Jim Dormer, who realized the need for fleet information and a preventive-maintenance-driven fleet program.

Chiles had advice for newer fleet professionals: “Create a culture of professionalism (clean shop and excellent record keeping), realize that your greatest assets are your technicians, parts, [and] clerical staff, and strive daily to recognize/appreciate and provide them the tools to be successful.”
