The City of Plainfield, N.J., council is considering creating a “manager motors” position to manage the city’s fleet of 253 vehicles valued at $7 million, TapIntoPlainfield reported.

Currently, four people separately cover fleet management: the police captain, fire lieutenant, public works superintendent, and mechanic. The city council passed the first reading for ordinances for the change, with proponents citing reduced costs and allowing other individuals to focus on their main tasks and opponents saying costs would be higher.

The projected annual salary of the manager motors was $70,887 in 2015, when the position was first considered.
