Iowa County Creates New Fleet Manager Position

The Scott County (Iowa) Board of Supervisors approved the creation of an in-house fleet manager position that will oversee the maintenance and management of vehicles for the county’s departments.

The county decided to create the role based on research from Mercury Associates, a consulting firm it hired in 2012, according to David Farmer, Scott County’s budget manager. Previously, each department managed maintenance for its own vehicles.

“They looked at our vehicle costs, they looked at the number of vehicles we had, the age of vehicles to make a recommendation on how we can improve overall efficiency on capital maintenance,” Farmer said about the Mercury study.

The research suggested that having one central fleet manager would gain better efficiencies for the county, as the different departments overseeing their vehicles might not have someone qualified to fill the role, Farmer said.

The fleet manager “will develop, plan and oversee the implementation of [an] efficient county fleet operation including vehicle procurement and maintenance,” according to the position’s job posting.

The county prefers candidates with a Bachelor’s degree; at least five to seven years of work experience; and CAFM, CPFP, or ASE certifications.

The deadline to submit an application is the afternoon of March 14.

The position is full-time with a proposed salary between $55,245 and $65,000 annually.
