Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) has introduced a bill that would require three federal agencies to cut 10% of their fleets and make up for that loss by using ride-sharing services under a pilot program, according to Government Executive.
Ride-sharing services include services like Lyft or Uber that allow users with smartphones to hail a ride through an application.
The bill would pull the departments of Agriculture, Interior, and Energy into the initial program. Together, with 60,000 owned and 27,000 rented vehicles, these departments make up more than one-third of the federal government’s civilian agency fleet, according to Government Executive.
How much or little the departments would decide to use the ride-sharing services would be up to each department’s secretary.
