Stone County (Mo.) has settled with a former fleet employee, agreeing to pay him $12,500 after he sued the county for not being reinstated to his previous position following deployment in the National Guard.

Ryan Joy was previously a shop manager at the Stone County Sheriff’s Department, according to KY3.com. In 2013, after a year away, he came back to find his position had been permanently filled by his temporary replacement, and he was given a lesser position.

The county’s stance is that Joy was an at-will employee, and his replacement was more qualified for the job.
