Ga. County's Outsourcing Plan Wouldn't Cut Jobs

March 16, 2016

Barrow County (Ga.) Interim County Manager Jimmy Terrell hopes to outsource fleet maintenance, because the county can’t buy new diagnostic equipment and train technicians to keep up with new technologies on vehicles, Barrow County News reported.

The plan wouldn'r reduce jobs, Terrell said. Technicians can stay on to handle heavy equipment repairs and be assigned to work crews.

In 2014, commissioners voted to not privatize the majority of its departments, and they’re concerned the issue is being brought up again.

Fleet Management is a division of the Public Works Department. It has two employees and had a FY-2015 budget of $120,000, according to the county website.

We can outsource Barrow County (Ga.) Interim County Manager as well. When the local dealers are over whelmed by the vast amount of work that needs to be completed daily weekly, monthly to yearly. This manager may not be in a job very long. I do agree that it is very expensive to maintain a fleet. But in house people have a very different level of priority and pride in their work. Outside repairs will not allow the city to operate. With vehicles (pumps, back hoes, dump trucks, fire engines, police cars etc are in shops all over a county or city. Now you need car hops to pick up and deliver vehicles or you will have a very hefty towing bills or cartage bills. Just think of the type of vehicles you may have out for repair just during a warranty period when you are forced to use dealers services so you can get your dollars back. Her's another bean counter who has no idea what the job curtails. Where's the fleet manager, if he knew what he was doing he would be able to show where the bean counter is out of line. now unless his job is treated as will. Someone has to manage the repairs. The bean counter can.
