Ga. County's Outsourcing Plan Wouldn't Cut Jobs

Barrow County's interim county manager is urging for outsourced fleet maintenance, claiming that the county can’t buy new diagnostic equipment and train technicians to keep up with new technologies on vehicles.

Barrow County (Ga.) Interim County Manager Jimmy Terrell hopes to outsource fleet maintenance, because the county can’t buy new diagnostic equipment and train technicians to keep up with new technologies on vehicles, Barrow County News reported.

The plan wouldn'r reduce jobs, Terrell said. Technicians can stay on to handle heavy equipment repairs and be assigned to work crews.

In 2014, commissioners voted to not privatize the majority of its departments, and they’re concerned the issue is being brought up again.

Fleet Management is a division of the Public Works Department. It has two employees and had a FY-2015 budget of $120,000, according to the county website.
