March 13, 2013, by Thi Dao

The Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) confirmed the death of an inmate worker at a DOC fleet shop on Monday, March 11 at 7:30 a.m. George Kronsbein, a 55-year-old worker at the East Canyon Complex DOC Fleet Service Station, was working on a hydraulic dump truck.

The Fleet Service Station is operated by Colorado Correctional Industries. The shop provides preventive maintenance and repair services to DOC vehicles, and employs five Correctional Industries staff and 10-15 trained inmate workers, according to the DOC.

Kronsbein entered the DOC as a habitual traffic offender in 2011 and returned in 2012 on another unspecified charge. The death is under investigation by the DOC Office of Inspector General.

Hi Greg, Thi Dao is in contact with the Colorado Dept. of Corrections about this incident. So far they've said they're investigating but they haven't released any new information about exactly what happened. Thi plans to write a follow-up story once we know more.
