An aging fleet, insufficient equipment, and a shortage of troopers all contribute to Kentucky State Police’s struggle to do its job, reports Bowling Green Daily News.
According to Commissioner Rick Sanders, the agency will need 260 cars within 12 to 18 months, and 180 cars per year after that in order to catch up on vehicle replacements. The latest cadet class received cars with an average of 140,000 miles logged. Troopers are also using outdated radios that are no longer in production, making it difficult to secure replacement parts.
