The Little Rock (Ark.) city manager has recommended spending $10.5 million over the next five years to update the city's police fleet, reports the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.
According to a memo from Bruce Moore, Little Rock city manager, 236 of the agency's 362 over-the-road vehicles have over 100,000 miles logged. Of these vehicles, 146 SUVs have over 150,000 miles and 61 SUVs have over 200,000 miles.
One point of interest is the agency's 80 patrol cars that are used 24 hours a day. Moore suggested the city purchase 60 additional vehicles so that patrol cars are only used for one shift a day, extending the service life of patrol vehicles from two to three years, to four to five years.
Moore also recommended replacing vehicles that have maintenance costs that exceed the procurement cost and assigning more vehicles to individual officers.
