President Obama wants to tighten standards covering the granting of surplus military equipment and vehicles to municipal and county law enforcement agencies, following the use of this equipment during the Ferguson, Mo., protests.

A White House review of the program concluded that the equipment has strengthened local policing, yet federal officials say local authorities need common standards about the types of hardware used and better training on how to use it, reports the New York Times.

Obama has proposed seeking more training and requiring after-action reports for incidents involving federal equipment.
