Arizona State Troopers Choose Kawasaki for Highway Patrol

PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Department of Public Safety is now the third state law enforcement agency in the western United States to adopt Kawasaki's Concours 14P as its primary motor unit.

The Concours 14P, a converted civilian cycle, has been available since 2008, when Kawasaki re-entered the law enforcement market. Three years earlier, the company had discontinued its KZ1000P, the workhorse cruiser featured on the television show "CHiPS."

Law enforcement agencies were slow to adopt the bike. However, its lights-out performance at the Michigan State Police vehicle tests in 2010 caught the attention of agencies.

Arizona troopers are now riding five of the bikes, and another five are scheduled for delivery in early January. The California Highway Patrol has agreed to purchase more than 400 of the bikes to replace its existing motor units. The Idaho State Police was the first state law enforcement agency to begin using these two-wheeled rockets.

Arizona's state 55-cycle motor unit is a mix of the Concours 14Ps, BMW R1150s, BMW R1200s, and Honda ST1300s. There are now 30 motor officers to patrol the state's four interstates and local highways.

Officer Jacob Pruet, a nine-year motor officer and driving trainer, meticulously research the bikes and won approval from the agency earlier this year to make the move.

Because they're running radar from a fixed position, troopers will benefit from the Kawasaki's quick acceleration (0-60 mph in 4.08 seconds) and nimble riding dynamics. Speed violators will have trouble outrunning this bad boy. A vehicle traveling at 70-75 mph will cover 105 feet of blacktop for each second that elapses after the officer locks in on the target.

"We need to be able to catch a speeder in a relatively quick amount of time in a short distance," Officer Pruet said. "This motorcycle gives us that opportunity to have quick acceleration but also a strong braking system."

In addition to its performance draw, the Concours 14P also offered the Arizona DPS a nearly $8,000 per-unit savings on upfront costs. The agency purchased the units from Beaudry Motor Sports.

    For all those that complain about using American product, check your duty belt and uniforms and tell me how many items you use daily on patrol are actually made in the great US of A, then get back to me! Why wouldn't you want the best product available to you? When Harley-Davidson decides to make a "modern" police bike that is truly comparable to the Honda, BMW and Kawasaki, then I will agree with the above comment.

    Instead of making silly comments based on blind patriotism, perhaps some of you should consider why HD is losing market share in this segment. It has nothing to do with American versus foreign. It has everything to do with HD continuing to make archaic products and alienating those people who want something more competent. Its Harley's own fault, all they know how to peddle is nostalgia. For example, BMW has been putting ABS on motorcycles since the 80s, many departments started switching to them because of it. HD being a little slow on the uptake finally started adding ABS in the mid-2000s, only two decades late. You can only play to people's patriotism for so long without keeping the technology current. The American car companies learned this lesson, maybe HD will too. I'm not a Harley hater. Far from it. I want to see them succeed. But for that to happen they have got to start playing to the market of riders that doesn't necessarily want a heavy cruiser-style motorcycle.

    It would be great if America produced a motorcycle that could be used. The problem is America dont . Besides, 40% of a Harley is produced in pacific rim countries. And to boot a lot of the larger Kawasakis are built in Nebraska. It's a world economy. Now if we could get a President Made in America.

    I'm glad to see that Arizona has purchased the Kawasaki's. For those who commented on "why not purchase American, Harley Davidson. Well, I can tell you why. Harley is NOT a police friendly motorcycle for Traffic Enforcement purposes. It sure looks pretty in a parade. No doubt about that. I rode a Harley (4 of them) over a 13 year period as a Motorman. I wish we would have gotten the Kawasaki's for the TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT purpose of them. You cannot in any way beat a Kawasaki, Honda, or BMW for Traffic and Highway Patrol use....PERIOD. They are phenomenal bikes for that purpose. They are extremely fast accelerating (which Harley is NOT) and they quickly catch up with violators. It's not because they aren't American. Its because they are the RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB!
