The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works recently purchased and placed into service nine heavy-duty compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks as part of its ongoing effort to reduce pollution and improve air quality.

The nine trucks — including a front loader, 10-yd. dump trucks, patch trucks, and street sweepers — cost about $2.5 million, and grant funding from the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC) provided $30,000 per vehicle, or $270,000 total.

Public Works plans to continue purchasing CNG (as well as electric and plug-in hybrid) vehicles to reduce harmful emissions.

Additional efforts to promote clean air vehicles and equipment include the upcoming installation of CNG stations, CNG maintenance facility upgrades, and installation of electric vehicle charging stations. Currently, CNG trucks are being fueled at non-county fueling stations using Voyager credit cards.
