Central California municipalities have been beefing up their fleets with battery-electric motorcycles supplied by a Clovis auto dealer to fight crime as well as air pollution, reports The Business Journal.

The Clovis Police Department has added five electric motorcycles, and is believed to be operating the largest electric police motorcycle fleet in the nation, reports Valley Public Radio.

Eckhaus Fleet has supplied 30 to 40 Zero Motorcycles products to local police departments throughout Central California. Another 70 motorcycles have been ordered. The Ceres Police Department has taken delivery of three Zero cycles.

The motorcycles have appealed to the agencies because they provide cost savings on fuel and require less maintenance that traditional cycles. The best-selling dual-sport model can travel 120 miles on a single charge with a top speed of 98 mph.
