DECATUR, GA – DeKalb County, Ga., recently saw the opening of two new CNG fueling stations, one of which converts trash from the landfill where one of the stations will be located. Earlier this year the County’s sanitation department converted 40 of its vehicles from diesel to CNG, and the goal is to eventually convert to CNG, or replace with CNG-fueled models, the 306 vehicles in the department. The County is forecasting $3 million in savings over the next eight years as a result of this change. These efforts are part of an ongoing program to utilize alternative fuels in the County.

The first new station is located at the Seminole Road Landfill in Ellenwood, Ga. and opened on Oct. 10, and the second one is a public fueling station operated by American Fueling Systems (AFS) that opened on Oct. 11. These two new stations bring the number in the area to four.

The landfill station received CNG from the County’s renewable fuels energy facility, which started operating earlier this year. The AFS location has a total of 8 fueling pumps on-site. The County plans to fill the 40 converted vehicles at both stations.

The County stated that both locations were funded as part of President Barack Obama’s stimulus funds through the U.S. Department of Energy.
