Milwaukee to Convert Refuse Trucks to CNG and Sell Natural Gas Fuel to the Public

May 25, 2012

MILWAUKEE – The City of Milwaukee has passed a resolution that would allow the City to work with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation on a program that involves the retrofit of refuse trucks with CNG fuel systems. Another recently passed resolution would also allow the City to sell CNG from municipal stations to the public.

At a cost of roughly $3 million, the CNG refuse truck retrofit program would use a $2.4 million federal grant to pay for the programming, construction, and engineering, involved in the conversion of 20 trucks to CNG. The City would pay the remaining $600,000 for the project. The grant funds would come from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Grant Program.

For CNG fuel sales, the program would allow customers to use bank cards to make fuel purchases, thereby eliminating any need for City employees to assist with selling the fuel to the public.
