City of Columbus Named No. 1 Government Green Fleet

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS - The 40 winners of the 2011 Government Green Fleet Awards were announced at the Green Fleet Conference on Oct. 4, with the City of Columbus, Ohio, named as the No. 1 Government Green Fleet in North America. Tom Johnson, author of the 100 Best Fleets program, presented an award to Kelly Reagan, fleet administrator, and Bill Burns, fleet operations manager.

The City of Columbus has the largest publicly accessible CNG capacity station in the Midwest, with two more stations projected, allowing the City to keep CNG prices low and creating a market for CNG vehicles. The City fleet's 24 heavy-duty dedicated CNG vehicles will displace 55,000 gallons of diesel fuel and reduce carbon dioxide by 490 metric tons. In addition, GPS tracking units on 3,035 on-road vehicles provide improved routing information, decreasing fuel and maintenance expenses.

The annual Government Green Fleet Award is open to all federal, state, and local government fleets in North America. Evaluation standards are divided into the following categories: fleet composition, fuel and emissions, policy and planning, fleet utilization, education, executive and employee involvement, and supporting programs.

The judges this year were: Dave Seavey, fleet manager for the City of Seattle and the No. 1 Government Green Fleet manager in 2010; Chris Wiley, green fleet coordinator, City of Seattle; Rhea Courtney Bozic, Clean Fuels Consulting; Steve Riley, fleet manager for the City of Coral Gables, Fla., and the architect of the contest criteria; and David Mills of David Mills and Associates.

The Government Green Fleet awards are given to fleets that demonstate sustainable practices in fleet composition, fuel and emissions, policy and planning, fleet utilization, education, executive and employee involvement, and supporting programs.
