Federal workers have illegally purchased more than $2.4 million worth of gasoline since 2010 using fleet gas cards, repots NBC Washington, citing federal records.
The U.S. General Services Administration has distributed 590,385 gas cards to employees in total, and there were about 260 cases of gas theft by government workers nationwide since 2010.
In some cases, workers used the cards to fill their personal cars and in other cases, used them to fill friends' and associates' cars and charging for the fuel.
As public agencies work to cut emissions from off-road operations, fleets are turning to a mix of renewable fuels, hybrid systems, battery-electric equipment and emerging hydrogen technology.
