Oakwood, Ga. Implements New Anti-Idling Policy

February 25, 2013

The City of Oakwood, Ga., has implemented a new anti-idling policy for its fleet vehicles and equipment. The policy prohibits idling for gasoline-, diesel-, and natural-gas-fueled vehicles.

The City said the policy does allow for idle times of up to five minutes during their initial shift warm-up and when being started after a prolonged period where the vehicle or equipment has been shut down.

Vehicles and equipment exempt from the policy include emergency vehicles and equipment engaged in police or emergency response operations, when auxiliary power is needed for the vehicle or equipment to perform its function; for defrosting a windshield and windows; for getting warm or dry if indoor accommodations aren’t available (for example during the winter months); and in when outdoor temperatures exceed 86 F. Other exemptions include when idling is required for inspecting or servicing the vehicle or when safety could be compromised by not idling the vehicle.
