Monmouth County Ends 3-Year Ordeal Over Fuel Theft

June 03, 2010

FREEHOLD BOROUGH, NJ - The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders has agreed to pay $95,000 to Harry Conover Jr., the former emergency management coordinator, after a three-year-long ordeal over several gallons of allegedly stolen gasoline, according to the Asbury Park Press.

The settlement, authorized May 27, is equal to Conover's salary in 2007, when he was charged with official misconduct for pumping 7.8 gallons of gasoline from a county pump into a private vehicle, reported APP.

Conover said he was using his county vehicle to tow a trailer to the county radio room when his vehicle began leaking antifreeze. He then borrowed someone's personal vehicle to drive to the radio room on county business and later stopped at the motor pool to put gasoline into the borrowed vehicle, APP reported.

Conover was indicted and agreed to enter a court intervention program to avoid a criminal trial. The charges will be dismissed when Conover completes the requirements of the program.

The amount of gasoline Conover had been accused of stealing was estimated to cost about $20, according to the APP.
