Government Fleet Expo Exceeds Expectations

September 2008, Government Fleet - Feature

Judging by registration totals and positive attendee response, the first-ever Government Fleet Expo & Conference met its theme goal of "Meeting Fleet Challenges with Creative Solutions."

Held last June in San Diego, the conference drew more than 350 fleet professionals and offered a wide range of relevant seminars and panels, expert presenters, and 61 public sector vendor exhibits.

Many attendees "couldn’t believe this was a first-time conference." For Stephen Kibler, fleet manager for the City of Loveland, Colo., "GFX conference sessions addressed exactly what I needed to know as an internal service division of a government municipality."

A conference highlight was a tour of the San Diego County fleet facility and networking reception, hosted by John Clements, fleet manager, and the County fleet team. Clements also provided a well-received keynote address, "Leading Under Fire: Beyond Managing," advocating fleet operations emergency planning.

Conference sessions, presented primarily by experienced fleet managers, covered such topics as insourcing, right-sizing, "greening" strategies, lifecycle costing, budgeting, telematics, and procurement.

The event also offered testing sessions for NAFA Fleet Management Association’s certified fleet manager (CAFM) designation and the America Public Works Association’s certified public fleet professional program.

In addition to participating in a vehicle ride & drive, conference attendees could confer with industry suppliers and learn about such new products and services as IronPlanet’s equipment auctions and Spitzlift cranes.

Optional third-day sessions featured user group seminars by FASTER fleet management systems, INVERS automated motor pool management, and MAXIMUS fleet management software programs.
