DENVER – Larry Campbell, CPFP, fleet management director for the City of Fort Wayne, Ind., was named the 2012 Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year at GFX. The award, sponsored by Fleet Counselor Services and the Government Fleet Management Alliance (GFMA), recognizes excellence in fleet management.

"It was very much a team effort," Campbell said. "I want to thank the staff back in Fort Wayne, because without them this could not have happened."

Campbell began his career in fleet 34 years ago and led the City of Fort Wayne to the No. 1 position in the 100 Best Fleets ranking in 2006. He is the president of the Greater Indiana Clean Cities Coalition Board of Directors and also sits on the American Public Works Association (APWA) board.

In 2011, Campbell, working with International, Eaton, and Sewer Equipment of America, helped complete the development of a Class 6 hybrid sewer jet truck, the first of its kind. The truck is in service, and the fleet is currently seeing a fuel savings of 43 percent over the same make, model, and type of equipment doing the same work.

In addition to working to “green” the City’s fleet, Campbell has worked to update the fleet maintenance shop, created a points system for procurement, and helped save $109,000 in fuel costs by locking in fuel prices and using lower-cost E-85.

At the City of Fort Wayne, Campbell manages a fleet of 1,835 units with a budget of $7.3 million.
