KNOXVILLE, TN – Gov. Phil Bredesen wants to put a new emphasis on the use of fuel-efficient vehicles in Tennessee state government.

The governor recently told his 17-member energy task force during a meeting in Kingport that he will be consulting with state agencies this summer, and hopes to issue an executive order by October, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel.

The policy could lead to purchases of more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Subcommittee chairman John Noel said state government spent $22 million last year on fuel for the 10,000 vehicles in its fleet. He said that could be cut in half if employees had to use compact cars when traveling on state business. However, the state has only 10 compact cars in its fleet currently.
