New York’s Orange County’s Fleet Considers Going Green

GOSHEN, NY — Lawmakers may push for more fuel-efficient vehicles in New York’s Orange County government fleet but are debating how specific they should be in their guidelines, according to the Times Herald-Record newspaper.

No legislators stated outright opposition as they began discussing a resolution that would encourage the purchase of hybrids and alternative-fuel vehicles when replacing cars, trucks, and SUVs in the county motor pool.

The proposal follows a green stance the legislature took last year, when it said that the county will consider environmentally friendly methods and alternative-energy sources for any construction or upgrade of county buildings. Like its predecessor, the vehicle policy would be more of a statement of principle than a mandate, since it wouldn’t dictate which cars to buy. But proponents hope it will be enough to chart a greener course for the county’s fleet.
