Ford’s new 3.5-L V-6-powered Police Interceptor will get 18 mpg city, 26 highway, according to Ford and the EPA. Ford said that compared to its predecessor, the Crown Victoria, the new Interceptor gets 4 mpg better in city driving, and 5 mpg better on the highway. In addition, Ford said the engine produces 38 more horsepower.
The optional EcoBoost 3.5L V-6 in the all-wheel-drive Police Interceptor sedan is rated at 365 hp and is EPA-certified at 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, according to Ford, and the Ford Police Interceptor utility comes with a 3.7L V-6 rated at 304 hp, which is EPA-rated at 16 mpg city, 22 mpg highway.
When it comes to the engines themselves, all three Police Interceptor engines feature double overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, and twin independent variable camshaft timing. In addition, Ford added electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) to the vehicles, which helps reduce fuel consumption while idling. The vehicle doesn’t consume energy until an officer turns the steering wheel. Ford also said it optimized the energy consumed by the air conditioning compressor and alternator.
